The Facts
Between 1996 and 2006, the population of seniors (people over 65) in Ottawa has doubled from 49,445 to 100,875.1
The home-care population in Ottawa has increased from approximately 19,578 in 2001 to 22,200 in 2006, an increase of 13 percent.2
By 2017, for the first time in Canada, seniors will account for a larger share of the population than children aged 0-14.3
The number of people, in Ontario, aged 75 and over is projected to rise from 847,000 in 2009 to almost 2.2 million by 2036. The 90+ group will triple in size from 73,000 to 261,000.4
Ottawa’s population of people 90 years of age and older will grow from 4,500 in 2006 to 9,900 by 2031.5
The projected population of people 60 to 90 years of age in Ottawa in 2011 is 170,300 (15.6% of total population). By 2021 it will be 235,700 (21% of total population).6
The median number of days for LTC home placement in the Champlain region is 237, close to eight months. The provincial average is 105 days.7
